Kakashi, despite being an Uchiha, unleashed his Sharingan on Zabuza. Fans have been scratching there heads, especially those who are new to Naruto!

All these questions are answered in the story by Kishimoto sensei! For those who don’t know, let’s jump right in!

How did Kakashi obtain the Sharingan?

Kakashi was part of Team Minato in his early days as a shinobi; with Minato Namikaze and Obito Uchiha as his sensei, and Rin Nohara as Rin Nohara.

Obito, even though he was an Uchiha, was significantly weaker than Kakashi in all aspects. He boasted about his Uchiha lineage and was lazy in nature.

He believed that he would be the strongest once his Sharingan was activated. He also dreamed of one day becoming a Hokage.

The third great ninja battle began during their time as a three-man group. Kakashi is promoted to the rank Jounin before the war begins.

Minato led his team on missions that were carried out across many fronts during the war. One such mission saw team Minato destroy the Kannabi Bridge in Kusagakure. The destruction of this bridge would reduce enemy supplies.

The team enters Kusagakure to search for an Iwagakure Shinobi. Kakashi attempts to kill him using his new Chidori. Kakashi’s tunneling effect leaves Kakashi open to a counter-attack. Minato was forced to kill the Iwa Shinobi by this tunneling effect.

Kakashi was also advised by him to stop using Chidori. Minato is given an order to confront Iwagakure Shinobi at a different front. Kakashi takes over.

Minato alone kills 1000 shinobi at this front. Minato’s departure causes the team to be ambushed by Iwa scout partners. They end up kidnapping Rin!

Obito then offers to rescue Rin, but Kakashi prefers to focus on the mission. Obito then delivers his famous line about friendship and makes Kakashi confront his trauma.

Kakashi changes his mind and joins Obito in fighting the Iwa Scout team. Kakashi is injured in the battle. Obito also unlocks his Sharingan by using 2 tomoe. The kids defeat the Iwa Scout team with the help of this.

The cave where Rin was held captive collapses after they rescue her. Obito pushes Kakashi to safety and Rin is crushed under a large boulder.

Obito, knowing that he will soon die, gives Kakashi his Sharingan as a gift to ensure the latter’s promotion to Jounin. So, Obito grants Kakashi his Sharingan.

Kakashi was granted the Sharingan by the other Uchiha in the village. It was the dying wish for a young boy.

Kakashi was given Sharingan by his friends as a gift. He earned the new moniker “Kakashi of Sharingan”. He was so proficient in using his borrowed Sharingan that Even Itachi Uchiha, a genius among Uchiha, praised him!

How did Kakashi get Mangekyou Sharingan?

After Rin was accidentally killed by Kakashi’s Chidori, Kakashi and Obito awakened Mangekyou Sharingan.

All this began when Madara, the Mist ninja, secretly kidnapped Rin to keep her safe and locked Isobu, the Three-Tailed beast within her, during the Third Great Ninja War.

A Forbidden Individual Curse tag was also applied by the mist ninja. This tag would unseal Isobu when Rin and Kakashi returned to Konoha.

Madara used Rin to control Obito. After witnessing the death of his love, he hoped that Rin would succumb to his dark side; lose faith in this world.

However, Madara had a backup plan if Obito didn’t sway too! Rin could make it to Konoha and take revenge on the Village Hidden in The Leaves if he did.

Madara was pleased with the outcome. His plan to make Obito witness Rin’s death worked.

Rin decided she had to die in order to ensure that the Leaf village does not suffer. But she could not kill herself. She asked Kakashi to execute her instead.

Kakashi refused, as one would expect. Obito had promised to save her life. Rin was aware that her survival would mean the loss of thousands of lives.

Rin attempted suicide by leaping in front Kakashi’s Chidori, which should have struck a Mist Ninja.

Kakashi wasn’t the only one to witness this. Obito, along with the other mist ninjas witnessed this horrible scene.

They could not have imagined the pure terror that the Sharingan holders felt. Kakashi killed the girl he had promised to protect; Obito witnessed his best friend murder his love; who he trusted to save her more than his own life.

To awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan, the Sharingan user must experience great trauma/pain. Sharingan evolution is possible through strong emotions such as fear, anger, and sadness.

The death of Rin triggered a flood of these emotions within the two, which led to them awakening the Mangekyou sharingan. However. One thing to remember is that both Kakashi as well as Obito woke the Mangekyou Sharingan separately.

Through their experiences of the incident, they awakened Mangekyou Sharingan.

Many believe it was Obito awakening Mangekyou Sharingan, which gave Kakashi Mangekyou mode.

This is false!

Kakashi also experienced fear and trauma. This caused him to awaken Mangekyou Sharingan.

While Kakashi fell unconscious from exhaustion, Obito immediately showed how strong his Magnekyou Sharingan was.

He embarked on a rampage that left a mark in animanga’s history as one of the most violent and emotionally charged rage scenes.

Although Kakashi didn’t seem to use the device much before Naruto Shippuden, he did awaken it at an early age. There may have been many reasons he didn’t use it or why he should.

It seems that Kakashi used Mangekyou Sharingan against Deidara for the first time; he couldn’t manage him with a normal Sharingan.

This was a post-time skip, meaning that he doesn’t need to care for three rookie genins. Kakashi’s growth was also possible because of Naruto’s and Sakura’s success.

This is vital, because Kakashi could not use his Mangekyou Sharingan for more than two hours per day. Because he isn’t an Uchiha, he would need to be in bed for a week.

But wait! But wait! He must have had at least two Sharingans. Yes! He did! Madara’s theft of the Sharingan wasn’t enough to stop the Copy Ninja!

It’s also a sound reason. It’s the principle of Ninshu, which was openly preached and practiced by the Sage Of Six Paths.

How did Kakashi obtain the Sharingan in both his eyes?

After Obito’s passing, Kakashi was given a pair Sharean in chapter 688. Kakashi and Obito ran in to protect Naruto, Sasuke and Kaguya. Obito then used his Kamui and saved Kakashi.

Obito died after succumbing to Kaguya’s attack and his soul entered the afterlife. He met Rin there and promised to save Kakashi one last time.

To allow Kakashi to continue Obito’s dream and become a Hokage. To help Kakashi, Obito’s spirit returns and transfers Sharingan Chakra to Kakashi. This allows him to create a perfect Susanoo.

How did this happen? How did Kakashi get Sharingan in both eyes? I’ll explain. Keep Obito’s promise, however, in your mind.

Obito explained in chapter 688 that Obito’s Sharingan would only work for a short time. Obito’s Chakra was no longer present in the physical world. His spirit went to the afterlife and took the Sharingan with him.

Wait again! You’ll be able to use the Sharingan even after the original user has died, right? Itachi, Shisui and Danzo are examples of this. Why didn’t we do it now?

It is because of how chakra works that Kakashi got the Sharingan in both his eyes. Everything in the shinobi universe is linked by chakra. Even souls are made from Chakra.

Minato’s soul, for example, was trapped in the Shinigami’s stomach; the Yang chakra of Kurama. This is because of the nature of his sealing jutsu.

We still see a chakra copy in Naruto’s seal. How? This is because of the nature and purpose of the soul in Naruto’s universe. Chakra can be shared and split (Shadow Clones), and soul is also a chakra. It can be found in many places.

Here is where the principle of Ninshu enters play. The principle of Ninshu is derived from the principle Of The One For All And All For One. It is well-known that Naruto employs many principles of Buddhism and Hinduism.

The chakra acts similarly in Naruto-verse as a binding force. This means that everything and everyone has chakra. In Naruto-lore, you can even share chakra with your fellow Naruto-loreans.

We can see a part of Minato’s soul in Naruto’s seal, along with Kushina’s soul. Danzo was also able to use the Sharingan’s of dead Uchihas because he physically had the eyes that contained Sharingan.

He can also provide his own chakra. If that wasn’t true, Kakashi wouldn’t be able to use Obito’s Sharingan.

Obito did not transplant his eyes in Kakashi during the 4th Shinobi War. He instead became the soul (chakra), and possessed Kakashi with his Juubi enhanced Sage Chakra, giving Kakashi the Sharingan.

We now know the date and method of Kakashi’s Sharingans. But, there is still one question about his eye! Many people have wondered if Kakashi could switch off his Sharingan like the other Uchihas. Let’s see if we can find out!

Why Can’t Kakashi Turn Off His Sharingan?

The Sharingan is an Uchiha clan Kekkei Genkai. This means that only Uchihas can use it efficiently.

When an Uchiha experiences extreme emotions (positive or negative), the Sharingan is formed. Their brain releases a certain chakra to their optic nervouss.

With time and training, the Uchiha learns to control this flow of chakra. An Uchiha body requires less chakra to activate Sharingan than a non-Uchiha one.

Therefore, if a non-Uchiha is given a Sharingan, their brains are biologically incapable of altering the flow of chakra to the optic nerves. Kakashi’s Sharingan works 24/7.

He also has to expend large amounts of chakra in order to keep his chakra active.

These limitations are why Kakashi doesn’t overuse his Sharingan, and also the reason he can’t turn it off!

Kakashi has lost the Sharingan after the fourth Shinobi War. This eliminates his main handicap of excessive chakra exertion.

This is again a double-edged sword as he has lost his Sharingan. Kakashi cannot use his signature moves Chidori and Raikiri anymore.

TL;DR:

Obito gave Kakashi the Sharingan as a present. He was half-way under the rock. This unfortunate incident occurred as Minato was returning from Rin rescue.

Kakashi awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan, after Rin committed suicide by walking in the line of Chidori’s Chidori. Madara had arranged all of this by sealing Isobu within Rin and leading Obito back to the spot where Rin died. Both Kakashi, Obito were traumatized and suffered intense pain. The two then awoke the Magekyou Sharingan.
