Weapons and how to channel them are key factors in the defeat of the Demon Slayer. You can improve your skills by using breathing styles or total concentration breath.

The blade of the weapon, however, is even more special. The Nichirin blade is a testimony to the fact that every breathing style is unique.

You’re likely to have noticed the colour of your blades if you are a good observer. Most of our main characters wear blades that are matched to their personalities and breathing styles, with Zenitsu’s yellow and Giyu’s blue.

What is a Nichirin Blade?

Nichirin blades, which are unique blades that kill demons, can be colour-changed and can even kill them (wisteria is the only thing that can kill demons).

The ore in the blade has sun-absorbing properties. It is naturally effective against demons that burn when exposed to sunlight.

Nichirin Blade also translates to “sunblade” in English. This is a tribute to the blade’s aforementioned abilities. Haganezuka also mentions that they can be called “color-changing swords”.

A nichirin sword may not be your typical sword. We can see from the Hashiras that not all katanas are used by many people, like Tengen or Mitsuri.

Blades can be made to fit different lengths and weapons, depending on the needs of the user.

All hashiras are inscribed with the phrase “destroyer demons” on their nichirin blades.

How are Nichirin Blades made

To obtain a nichirin sword, you must pass the Final Selection. This is the entrance exam to become a Demon Slayer.

The corps members then present the ore to the user. The Final Selection is completed and the corps members are allowed to select their ore.

The blade’s composition, however, is heavy in what Haganezuka refers to as the Scarlet Iron Sand or Scarlet Ore.

This is most likely a mythological reference for Hihi’irokane. It was an ancient magical ore. This ore is believed to have been used in the Japanese Regalia.

The name “brilliant Scarlet Metal” is a reference to the fact that swords made from it have a sheen similar to flaming flames. They are also conductors of emotions .

This is likely why the blades change color in Demon Slayer.

Nichirin Blade Colors explained

The blade’s colour changes when the user pulls it from its sheath.

It is possible that the color change has to do the ore acting as a conductor for emotion. The blade will take the colour that represents the user.

This is where you can find breathing styles! All blades indicate colours with qualities that are similar to the characters!

Tanjiro is taught by Rengoku Kyojuro the five main breathing styles as well as their derivatives.

This colour code is embedded in the symbolism of the style. A fiery red represents flame breathing and a calm blue water.

Let’s now look at the breathing styles, and the accompanying nichirin-blade colours!

Red Nichirin Blade

Red is associated with the Flame Hashira Rengoku Kyojuro. Red is a symbol of self sacrifice and passion in Japanese culture. It suits the blazing power and ideals that Kyojuro represents.

Red is a sacred colour in Japan. It also symbolizes fighting spirit and protection . This is something Rengoku adheres to until his death.

His attacks are quick and brutal, making him synonymous with hot lava, which swallows everything in its path.

This red should not be confused with “crimson” nichirin blades (more later). )

Blue Nichirin Blade

Water breathing users have blue nichirin blades. Blue, which is opposite the bright aura of red, smybolises calmness & passiveness. attributes are found in all water breathing users.

Despite their modest appearances, they are able to save others and become one with the water. Both Tomioka Gifu and Urokodaki Sakonji have blue-coloured blades.

Yellow Nichirin Blade

Zenitsu’s yellow nichirin blade symbolizes his breathing style: Breath Of Thunder. Zenitsu has a lightning bolt running the length of his blade, rather than a single colour sheet.

Although the obvious yellow color is intended to signify lightening, in Japan yellow denotes sunshine or flowers. Zenitsu truly is the sun boy of the trio.

A Japanese person who has a yellow voice is known to have a shrill sounding voice. Zenitsu was the Demon Slayer’s first character I thought of!

Green Nichirin Blade

Shinezugawa Sanemi, The Wind Hashira’s nichirin Blade is in green.

Like other cultures, the color green is associated with appreciation for flowers. However, green is also a symbol of youth and energy . This is in line with Sanemi’s behavior, who is quick to his feet.

The colour green is also associated with wind, making it easy to symbolise this element.

Indigo

The nichirin blade of Hashibara Inosuke is Indigo/grey.

Indigo, a natural dye, has been used in Japan for hundreds of years.

In this instance, Indigo is so much more than that! Indigo represents sincerity. Inosuke has demonstrated his loyalty and has always had the support of his fellow soldiers!

Pink

Kanroji Mitsuri’s pink nichirin whip has a pink color.

Pink is the Japanese symbol for femininity and good health. It is also the symbol of spring. These three words would describe Mitsuri if I had to describe it!

Mitsuri is an inspiring woman because she accepts herself as she is. Sakura Mochi has made her hair pink. You guessed right Sakura (cherry blossoms), are the symbol for spring!

Light Pink

Light pink is used for Flower Breathing. This was the colour of Tsuyuri Kao and Kocho Kanae’s blades. Although pink can also be used to signify flower-breathing users, light rose smybolises tenderness.

PS: This doesn’t necessarily mean that you can take them all at once. Flower breathing is a crazy technique!

Lavender

Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro has a nichirin blade in the color lavender.

This flower symbolizes faithfulness Japan. Obanai is the embodiment of the adjective, with his unending love for Mitsuri and desire to make them happy even if it’s only in the afterlife.

It is also a symbol for calmness, silence and stillness. This suits Obanai’s undertow very well! It could be Obanai’s snakelike movement style.

Periwinkle Purple

Similar to Insect Hashira Kocho Shinobu, the nichirin blade of Insect Hashira Kocho Shinobu is in a periwinkle-purple colour. It oscillates between light blue, lavender, and that is why periwinkle is a great choice.

The colour is peace and love. Her calm eyes conceal the anger at having her sister taken away from her.

As she strives to honor her sister in every aspect of her life, her bright personality and joy are a testimony to her unwavering love.

Periwinkle also known as “flower of Death”.

White

Tokito Muichiro’s Mist Hashira is all white. White is a precious colour for Japanese, just like red.

This colour was used during mourning from the beginning of western ideas in Japan in late nineteenth century. This is a result of Buddhist tradition.

It also represents purity! White is often used to describe mist. After the death of his twin, Muichiro is in mourning. has become amnesiac and mist his personality.

He is determined and skilled in his quest to eliminate demons. white, being the youngest hashira in the age hierarchy, resembles his position as another colour of youth.

Amber

Amber is the color of Tengen Uzui’s nichirin-cleavers, The Sound Hashira. Amber is energy and boldness.

Tengen is bold and proud of his flamboyance. Tengen uses sound “energy” to take down his enemies, so the colour is a good representation of the hashira.

Grey

Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima’s Nichirin spiked flail (and axe) are made from the same ore as nichirin blades. His weapon is grey.

In Gyomei’s instance, grey is often associated with dullness and eventually loss of sight. However, the color represents more positive things about Japan.

Grey demonstrates maturity and reliability. These attributes make Gyomei the most approachable Hashira.

Purple

Upper Moon 1 Kokushibo uses a unique breathing technique called “Breath Of The Moon”. His sword’s colour is purple . In Japan, purple represents royalty.

This colour reflects Kokushibo’s grand appearance.

Black Nichirin Blade

Tanjiro, the main character in the story, is the only one to have used a black blade. Black is associated with evil, naturally. It is mystery in this instance.

What made Tanjiro’s blade so sharp? It makes sense that it wasn’t blue but Haganezuka was expecting to see red. Is this due to his ability to practice both forms?

This is why Tanjiro uses a black blade .

When will the Nichirin Blade become “crimson”?

When it turns crimson, a nichirin blade is capable of exceeding its capabilities and powers. This is a different color than the Flame Hashira’s nichirin red.

The primary factor that triggers the change is the increase in temperature. There are three options:

  • First, the blade can become red if the user holds onto their sword tightly and puts all of their strength into it. The blade’s temperature rises depending on how strong the user is.

Obanai mentioned that the blade turns to red when the user is “pushing him to the brink or death” .

  • Second, friction between weapons can cause the blade to turn crimson due to heat.
  • Finally, Tanjiro uses Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art for setting his sword ablaze, giving it all the heat it required to turn red.

The first two methods can only be used with the demon slayer marks.

Yoriichi Takiguni was first to activate the Crimson Red Nichirin Blade.

The nichirin blade can be extremely dangerous for demons, as it can hinder regeneration and also cause cell death. Kokushibo felt the power of a crimson-red blade firsthand. He described it as feeling his insides were being seared.

Are Nichirin blades real?

Historical accounts of colour-changing blades are not available. As mentioned, the Hihi’irokane ore is the only source of information for the creation of the nichirin blad.

Proplica is known for creating life-size versions of popular anime and mangas. However, they have now released real life nichirin knives!

It began with Tanjiro getting his katana forged. Now, the collection also includes Rengoku Kyojuro and Kocho Shinobu’s swords.

They are not only made with great care, but also have an audio feature that voices the characters’ most memorable lines.

YouTube has a plethora videos showing fans how to recreate the weapons for the other characters.
