Subaru stumbled upon Echidna the Witch of Greed in the Graveyard at Sanctuary. She was already dead when she met her. She does, however, tell Subaru she was dead.
According to the bare history of the witches in sin of the world of Re:Zero, Satella was responsible. Fans believe that Echidna was killed in the Great Calamity 400 years ago.
Meaning, Satella killed her!
But that is not true. Satella wasn’t responsible for Echidna’s death. Echidna’s death was not the fault of Satella.
This question is more prominent when you consider how Echidna was obsessed with immortality. It’s especially relevant at the end Arc 4 (season 2 of anime).
Is Echidna dead?
This is a difficult question to answer. Echidna could have died physically. Her remains are peacefully resting in the tomb. Her soul, however, survived for over 400 years in the dream castle.
Subaru is no longer in her body when she meets her at the sanctuary. Her soul appears to be fine.
It retains the personality, memories, and knowledge of the Witch of Greed. It seems to be aware to some extent of what is going on in the present.
But, why is her soul in the dream palace?
The conversation between Subaru, Echidna at the first tea party in the Web Novels will provide the answer.
Echidna, in this conversation, admits that her physical body was destroyed and that she is now a ghost. Echidna was a ghost because she wanted to counter the Witch of Envy.
Although the witch of envy may have been sealed in a faraway country, it was not impossible to break. Every change in nature could make the sealing stone weaker.
The dragon and those heroes who had gathered together to defeat her might not be able to survive. Even if they were gone, it was necessary to have someone who could challenge her.
This is why Echidna was left behind.
It’s true, I am a ghost. Because I am a spirit body that has lost its physical form, it is obvious to me. Now, let me tell you …… why I am here. It’s a counterforce. This would be the best answer I can think of.
Re:Zero webnovels: Echidna to Subaru TranslationChicken.
This part was then removed from the anime and light novels. Tappei Nagatsuki (the author of Re;Zero) either felt that this was too much information too early in the series or decided to alter the storyline.
We chose to stick with the former. It was likely too much information too quickly. It might be revealed in the future.
We now know Echidna is alive and well. Let’s look at this information in light of her immortality experiments.
These tests were done to verify if Echidna could attain immortality through the transmission of her soul and her knowledge. She is very close to reaching her goals.
Roswaal actually perfects this method for soul transcription after Echidna’s passing.
It is obvious that Echidna could technically resurrect if her soul finds a suitable vessel. Light novel vol 15 also has something similar.
Warning: This section contains a specific scene from the light novel that is not yet shown in the anime. You can skip ahead to your discretion. To avoid spoilers, you can skip the section and continue reading.
The Light Novel contains the following content:
If you’re an anime-only fan, Ryuzu Shima might have noticed a difference in her voice when she talks to Emilia or the other Ryuzu copies.
White Fox was providing a subtle hint about the future. Echidna is actually resurrected in Ryuzu Meyer’s Light novels by transferring her soul to the copy.
These Ryuzu copies were actually made to serve as puppets for Echidna during her exeriments. They served their purpose.
If we had to answer the question about Echidna dying, it would be that Echidna, as she is currently viewed in Re:Zero’s world, is still alive. She is now Omega and has been resurrected in Ryuzu Meyer’s body.
The concept of revival was complex and we will explore it in a separate blog.
Who was responsible for Echidna’s death? How did she die
It is likely that Echidna was killed 400 years ago, even though her body was not found. Who could it be?
It remains to be questioned what happened in the Sanctuary following Hector’s arrival.
Echidna survived the encounter. This is because Echidna created copies of Ryuzu Meyer after Ryuzu became core of the sanctuary.
Echidna passed away shortly after.
She did not die of old age. Her body is found in the grave in her late twenties. She could have died from some unknown illness.
The Witch of Envy is also a major suspect in her murder. As we have already mentioned, Satella wasn’t likely to be responsible for her death.
Let’s return to the web novels for this part!
Echidna was bound to the dream palace by Volcanica, the dragon Volcanica. Echidna was sealed in the grave of her mother to counter the Witch of Envy.
This could indicate that Echidna’s fate was sealed before she died. It is obvious that Echidna wasn’t killed by her.
This Dragon’s power sealed me here in this Grave. This was done to counter the “Witch of Envy”, as you correctly inferred.
Echidna to Subaru, Re:Zero Web Novel Arc 4.
We must be careful with this information, as it was removed from the Light Novels.
The events in the Sanctuary (Hector’s appearance and all) take place before Satella swallows the entire world. It is possible, however, that Satella swallowed her.
However, there’s no conclusive evidence to support this assertion.
If it wasn’t Satella, then who? The other candidate is the Divine Dragon Volcanica.
Echidna could have been killed by the dragon if it was responsible for sealing her soul. There is also the issue of Echidna appearing different at the tea party than in the grave.
It becomes quite complicated when you take into account all of these factors.
Satella did not kill Echidna. It is not known what caused her death 400 years earlier.
We may be able to get more information about her past, now that we know that she was resurrected.
What do you think about Echidna’s passing? What do you think happened to her? We’d love to hear your thoughts in our comments section. !
